Dear Friends and Colleagues,

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is our greatest pleasure to welcome you to the 5th Data Driven Control and Learning System Conference (2016 DDCLS), which is held by Technical Committee on Data Driven Control, Learning and Optimization, Chinese Association of Automation, locally organized by Beijing University of Chemical Technology, and co-sponsored by Beijing Association of Automation. The conference is associated with 2016 CCDC and jointly held at Ningxia Hongqiao Hotel, Yinchuan, China, May 29 ¨C31, 2016.

Data driven control and learning system is an emerging and hot research area in the field of automation as an indispensable part of complete control theory besides model-based control. It focuses on control, optimization and learning for the plants when their models are unavailable. Although the study on data driven control and learning is still in the embryonic stage, it has attracted a great deal of attentions within the control theory community. In recent years, there are several special issues published (or to be published) in the top journals of control community: ACTA AUTOMATICA SINICA (2009), IEEE Transactions on Neural Networks (2011), Information Sciences (2011), IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics (2013), IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics (2015, 2016), IET Control Theory & Applications (2015, 2016).

The Technical Committee on Data Driven Control, Learning and Optimization was established under supervision of Chinese Association of Automation in Beijing, June 2015. In fact, there was a series of workshops in this fields from 2006, ILC¡¯2006 at Hangzhou, ILC¡¯2011 at Xi¡¯an, ILC¡¯2014 at Qiangdao, and the forth Data Driven Control and Learning System at Beijing (2015 DDCLS) with over 100 attendances.

As an inheritance of previous four workshops, 2016 DDCLS continues to attract broad interest throughout the world, with acceptance of 102 papers. This reflects the increasing interest in our field, and meanwhile creates a difficult workload in evaluating the papers and organizing a cohesive program. We were fortunate to have an exceptional International Program Committee (IPC) that sorted through the evaluations and integrated the individual submissions into the final technical program described in this volume. We also want to thank our Organizing Committee for their invaluable assistance in arranging the diverse offerings at the conference, from registration and local arrangements to technical programs. Last but not least, we would like to express my deeply appreciation to the support from Beijing University of Chemical and Technology, Organizing Committee of 2016CCDC, Northeastern University, and Beifang University of Nationalities.

The International Program Committee has assembled a comprehensive technical program that covers a broad spectrum of topics in Data Driven Control and Learning System. The 2016 DDCLS technical program on May 30 comprises 11 sessions with 6 regular sessions, 4 invited sessions and 1 interactive session. Besides the technical sessions, the highlights of the 2016 DDCLS are the plenary/distinguished lectures given by distinguished senior/young scholars from USA, Singapore, and China on May 31. We thank the authors, plenary/distinguished lecture speakers, invited session organizers, and session chairs for their tremendous efforts towards a top-quality program.

Apart from attending the technical program, you are encouraged to experience the magic of Yinchuan, China.

As a final note, we want to thank the large number of volunteers who have made this conference possible. Without you, the monumental task of organizing this conference would be significantly beyond our capabilities. Thank you for your invaluable support!
